Reflective/Goal Setting:
Well it’s been a roller coaster of a ride! One minute I think I’m getting the hang of it the next I’m trudging up hill trying to manage all the lesson plans and other things such as management and a teacher work sample. I can tell you one thing I have greatly learned, and that is to take advantage of the time one has when working on things. There is little room to procrastinate!
Overall I believe my journey through EDUC450 has been a success. Yes it has been rough and sometimes hard to see the larger picture, but now I’m on the last leg and I’m putting the pieces together. Some of the teaching strategies I see myself using everyday whereas some not so much. The class gave me a good perspective of what I need to do as a teacher. I need to develop better management skills. I believe this take practice and an ability to overcome through failure. I didn’t learn to draw immediately, it took many years of practice and I imagine that’s how teaching is as well. As long as I keep an open mind and an ability to adapt to my students and the times, then I will be moving in the right direction.
To be able to reflect upon ones mistakes or failures and take action to fix what went wrong is essential to being an effective teacher. It’s great if I know my students, but if I don’t apply that knowledge to the curriculum then it’s irrelevant. I’ve had great relationships with some of my high school teachers but they didn’t relate the curriculum to myself so in the end I didn’t totally grasp what they were teaching. Also making many of the brilliant concepts in art transferable to other curriculums is how I’ll keep my job. In an era and society that looks down upon art in schools, it is essential I teach in a way that builds divergent thinkers and evolves minds to make connections throughout everything. Being able to problem solve and create new inventive ways of looking at things have been my strengths and I look forward to guiding students to achieve these same strength and become more well-rounded individuals.
